.m. on the east coast, 11:00 a.m. out west. thanks for joining us. i'm miguel marquez in for fredricka whitfield. new information about a horrifying hostage situation in al bam pla now in its fifth day. police are in constant communication with a man holding a 5-year-old in an underground bunker in midland city, alabama. george howell is there. police came out with new details what items the suspect jimmy lee dikes is giving the child. what are they? >> we just heard from the sheriff here, wally olson. he said a few interesting things. we learned that mr. dykes has electric heater and blankets. certainly it's cold in the bunker, about a constant 50 degrees in that bunker underground. they're still able to get the young boy medications he needs. he suffers from asperger's syndrome and dhd. also able to get him the crayons and coloring book. also toys. and there was another interesting thing that i noticed in this particular press conference. when the sheriff said that he wanted to thank mr. dykes, listen to this. >> he's told us that he has a lk heater and blankets inside that he's taking care of

.m. out west. i'm miguel marquez. if you're just tuning in, thanks for joining us. these are the top stories we're following in the cnn newsroom. new details about the murders of two military veterans, one a former navy s.e.a.l., chris kyle and his friend chad littlefield were shot and killed in ft. worth texas. the man who pulled the trigger is a veteran who kyle may have been trying to help with ptsd. susan candiotti joins us live with more. what do we know about how this happened? >> well, got some brand new information during the press conference. first of all, we learned about an alleged confession. and police say they think they also have found the murder weapon, when they describe as a semiautomatic handgun that was found at the suspect's house. let's back up a little bit. after the double shooting at that gun lodge, police say the suspected shooter who's 25-year-old eddie ray ralph took off in kyle's pickup truck. then they said that he went to his sister's house and told her and his brother what had happened, and then left that house. that's when the sister called the police

with normal video and this is me being shot with the eight millimeter application. the death tore showed us frame by frame where he used the app. one example, this aerial sequence. >> this is actually out of a flight window. it looks like real film. you can't tell the difference. >> reporter: he told us he also used the app to shoot video off a computer screen. his purpose was to get that '70s feel, the time when rodriguez, his subject, was actively making music. >> i filmed this with regular film, and i shot the computer screen, like that, so i got the super eight feeling. >> reporter: tracking down the creator of the app proved a challenge. we eventually located him in northeastern china where he was visiting. by skype he shared his reaction to finding out his app was used in an oscar nominated film. >> it's crazy. we are pretty thrilled. >> reporter: hearing about his app's connection to the film inspired him to watch "searching for sugar man." >> what did you think? >> it's quite a touching film. >> reporter: hong is a fan of the movie by beng lou is a fan of the app. nischelle turner,

's susan candiotti closely following this story for us. susan, what details can you fill us in on? >> reporter: it's just so sad. when legendary navy s.e.a.l. sniper chris kyle and his friend chad littlefield took another marine vet, 25-year-old eddie ray routh, to a gun range, they never managed the weapons could be turned on them. but police say that's exactly what happened. wf kyle and littlefield shot dead multiple times at a remote area of a gun range near ft. worth, texas. police say they were found nearly two hours later by a guide at the range. investigators say routh drove off in kyle's pickup truck and headed to his sister's house. he allegedly told her and his brother who had happened. he left and then his brother and sister called police. when a slew of police officers arrived at his house, routh was in kyle's pickup truck. a hostage negotiator tried to talk him out of the car, but then he took off down the road. here is how a witness described it. >> i was scared. i'm sitting below the window line. i was peeking out, but they had him -- they had like four shotguns on

certainly hope they are. the city hopes bostonians are. certainly they and new englanders are used to huge nor'easters and blizzards like this. 35 years ago, you had the storm of '78, when they had more than 27 inches. this could rival those record amounts. we'll have to see what happens. but as of now, noontime is zero hour. a snow emergency has gone into effect and now people are being told that's it, get off the streets. if your car is there, it's going to ghettet towed. so certainly if take you a look at the store shelf, they are empty. it is clear that people have been fwg out within the last 24, 48 hours since these warnings began. buying all kinds of essential supplies, including nonperishable foods, water, batteries flashlight, maybe portable radios, make egg sure their batteries are charged, making slur they have cash on hand, making sure that they he their tanks filled up with gas. and of course all kinds of snow equipment also is at the ready. they have more than 43,000 tons of salt ready to hit the road. so people here are bracing for that big storm and as you can see, the snow
